Female Archer in Battle New "Hobbit" Movie Shows Female Archer in Battle

The official trailer for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” shows Tauriel, an elf archer, shooting a bow in battle. Evangeline Lilly, known for her role on TV’s “Lost,” plays Tauriel, a character who never appeared in J.R.R. Tolkein’s original works.

This is the second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit,” by J.R.R. Tolkien. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventure of the title character, Bilbo Baggins, as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and 13 Dwarves on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf kingdom of Erebor.

In one of the trailer’s first scenes, as Tauriel fights the evil Orcs, she says: “It will not end here. … With every victory, this evil will grow.”

Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom), who appeared in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, shoots his Mirkwood recurve bow in battle scenes. He’s followed by Tauriel shooting a bow in battle as an enormous spider crawls toward her.

Peter Jackson, famed director of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” is the latest to recognize archery’s mass appeal. Jackson and co-writers for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” created Tauriel to inject female energy into the male-dominated “Hobbit” narrative.

Lilly said her character “sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit,” but also “fits perfectly in that world.”
