District 2, makers of firearms and weapons, also made Katniss Everdeen’s bow. Not the real-life manufacturers of the bow used in the movie (that’s Hoyt), but Panem’s bow makers. Check out a few factoids you may not know about the bow:
Katniss’ bow is so iconic, it’s inspired jewelry, like this primrose flower, bow and arrow necklace, available on Etsy.
A tiny replica of the bow is included with Catching Fire Barbie.
And the bow, along with “Catching Fire” characters, has been immortalized in edible cookie form.
Panem’s District 2 may make only recurve bows, but there are actually three common bow types used for archery and bowhunting: recurve, compound and traditional.
How to identify it: You can identify the recurve bow by the curved tips at either end of the bow, which increases the speed of the bow and the smoothness of the release.
Why it’s special: Your bow gets its power from the unique curve at the limb tips, a design first developed by Egyptian archers thousands of years ago and now used by archers including Olympian Jake Kaminski.
What it’s known for: Aside from appearing in “The Hunger Games” and “The Avengers” recurves are known for their widespread use in target archery and the Olympics, where it is the only style of bow allowed in competition. Many archers also shoot recurve bows in field archery, 3D archery, and in bowhunting with higher poundage recurves.
How to identify it: You can identify the compound bow by the multiple strings and the system of pulleys at either end of the bow.
Why it’s special: The pulley system or “cams” on either end of the compound are what give the bow its unique “let-off” capability. A let-off is the point during the draw when a compound archer can hold less draw weight. It allows the archer to take more time in aiming and is especially useful in hunting situations.
What it’s known for: Compound bows are known for their widespread use in field and 3D archery as well as bowhunting. Many archers also shoot compound bows in target archery, or, if you’re Emilie Okopal, you use your compound bow to accessorize formalwear.
How to identify it: Traditional bows can be longbows or recurves, so long as they do not have sights, stabilizers, or other accessories. You can identify the longbow by its straight limb tips at either end of the bow.
Why it’s special: You will see traditional shooters in target archery, field archery, 3D archery, and some will use them for bowhunting at higher draw weights. Traditional bows usually do not come apart the way “takedown” recurve bows do for target archery and the Olympics. Another type of traditional style bow is called a “selfbow,” which is a longbow made from a single piece of wood.
What it’s known for: Archers shoot traditional bows in all the major types of archery. You will see traditional shooters in target archery, field archery, 3D archery, and some will use them for bowhunting at higher draw weights. Some archers will use traditional bows during their adventures in Middle Earth.
Knowing how you want to shoot archery will help you choose the right archery equipment.
