to Katniss Everdeen Catching Fire: Hoyt Buffalo Takes Bowhunting to New Level Thanks to Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen may have been the Mockingjay in “The Hunger Games” series, but her weapon of choice against the Capitol forces was a simple recurve bow. Enter celebrity bowhunter Fred Eichler. It was Eichler’s bow design and the engineers from Hoyt who assembled the most recognized recurve on the planet.

“Hoyt’s got some great bows, but for me, I wanted a bow that was a little faster, a little quieter and easier to travel with than anything they had at the time,” Eichler said. “Hoyt was great because they said, ‘Let’s design one that’s perfect for you and hopefully that’ll translate to other bowhunters.’ So we worked on a quick takedown bow and came up with the Buffalo.

Eichler’s inspiration as a bowhunter led to the overall designs of the Buffalo. After a few tries, the bow was exactly what he wanted. It didn’t take the movie producers very long to recognize the genius of the design and choose it for the movie.

“The producers were looking for something ‘futuristic’ for the ‘Catching Fire’ movie and the Buffalo fit the bill,” Eichler said. “It’s a cool-looking bow so it really worked for the movie. Of course, it was really cool for them to choose that particular bow for Katniss to shoot.”

As for Hoyt, the company sees the Buffalo’s placement in a popular movie as an opportunity to not only be recognized on the big screen, but to help grow the sport of bowhunting and archery in general.

“From ‘The Avengers’ to ‘The Hunger Games,’ the excitement for archery is out of this world,” said Jeremy Eldredge, marketing manager for Hoyt. “Having the Hoyt Buffalo be the bow Katniss uses in ‘The Hunger Games’ is simply awesome.”

And while Katniss may be the talk of the town in Hollywood right now, Eichler said it is a little simpler at home.

“The kids think I’m cool since it’s my bow in the movie,” he said.
