“The Hunted,” a new movie about bowhunting buddies filming a deer hunt in hopes of landing their own hunting show, is thrilling and frightening audiences wherever it plays by showing what happens when archery and terror mix.

“The Hunted” movie played to a sold-out crowd in Eugene, Oregon, July 10, and Archery 360 talked with triple threat Josh Stewart who wrote, directed and starred in the film as Jake. The actor is best known for his roles on “The Walking Dead,” “Criminal Minds,” “The Collector” and “Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.”

Stewart, a life-long archer and bowhunter, grew up in West Virginia, where the film is set, and has always wanted to tell this story, which is based on true events from his college days.

“Just to go back to the woods I grew up in, where the story originally happened, to go back with buddies and do what I’ve been doing for the last 10 years, was the best feeling,” Stewart told Archery 360.

A “found footage” film along the vein of “The Blair Witch Project” and “Paranormal Activity,” “The Hunted” shows what happens when two friends set out in the woods to film a bowhunt and realize the tables have turned on them once night falls. Well-known brands Bowtech, ScentBlocker and Realtree supported the movie.

The Very Aware movie blog said The Hunted is “88 minutes of unrelenting terror – and the third act will have you holding your breath and hiding behind the person next to you.

Field & Stream’s Dave Hurteau said Stewart, “ratchets up the tension brilliantly by making us stare for long stretches into the pitch black and around the weird trunks of twisted saplings lit ghostly white in flashlight beams.”

From the moment the movie trailer opens with Jake’s hunting buddy saying, “What is it? Do you hear something? That doesn’t sound like a deer” to the point where he whispers “It’s hunting us,” “The Hunted” clearly aims to terrify.

Hunting celebrity Eva Shockey, who recently became the first woman to appear on the cover of “Field & Stream” in 30 years, was also at “The Hunted” screening, and talked to Archery 360 about her new TV show “Uncharted,”  and how to enjoy the outdoors.

“You don’t have to hunt to be outdoors,” Shockey told Archery 360. “Go out, take a bow to the archery range, get someone to teach you how to shoot properly, and that will get you outdoors.”

Shortly after the movie screening, Shockey’s Facebook status said:

“Just walked out of THE HUNTED movie premiere and scared out of my boots. Scared to go back out in the woods!!”
