We’ve kept our eyes on the new “Wonder Woman” movie that stars Gal Gadot in the iconic role, and a recent clip makes us wonder if archery could play a big part in the movie. A new trailer, released at Comic-Con International: San Diego in July, shows a powerful Wonder Woman fighting alongside soldiers on a battlefield during World War I. During this scene, there is an amazing shot of our heroine firing a longbow while gracefully leaping into the air. This quick clip hints at the archery that might be present in the film. And while the movie looks good so far, we’re hoping this trailer is only the beginning of archery’s role.

The Wonder Woman story line is based on the Amazons of Greek mythology, with the mighty God Zeus being her creator, or “father.” A couple of characters from Greek mythology are known for wielding a bow and arrow, so it makes sense for Wonder Woman to wield one, too. There’s Eros (or Cupid in Roman mythology), the universal god of love whose arrow encourages potential soulmates to get together. There are also twins Apollo and Artemis, the gods of archery and the children of Zeus and Leto. Including Apollo and Artemis in the new film would relate to the already established lore that Zeus created Wonder Woman. As Wonder Woman’s half-brother and half-sister, Apollo and Artemis could appear in the movie to add another element of archery and still make sense with the world that has been created.
No matter the universe – DC, Marvel or other – the hero in question has something that is distinctly and uniquely theirs. And that’s what makes them “super.” For instance, Superman is indestructible, Spiderman has his webs, Batman has the Batmobile, and Wonder Woman has her lasso. Hawkeye, the resident archery superhero character, fights his enemies with a compound bow or a modern recurve bow. What the superhero world lacks is a character shooting archery in its most basic form, using the kind of bows that started it all: the longbow. Cue: Wonder Woman!
Amazonian women would have used a longbow like ancient warriors used to shoot. Add in superhuman speed and strength, and there’s plenty of room for Wonder Woman to swoop in and steal the traditional archery show!
As always, everyone wants to know who would win in an archery battle with Wonder Woman. In an archery showdown between Wonder Woman and, well, anyone else, Wonder Woman would have the edge. Her lightning speed and bracelet deflectors would be no match for any incoming weapons, arrows included. If they can stop a bullet, they can surely stop an arrow. Plus her lightning speed gives her the advantage of leaping over her foes to get the best vantage point for aiming.
